For the second year in a row, the “Science Of Scare” project from Broadband Choices has attempted to figure out the scariest movies ever made. Last year, “Sinister” was named the scariest movie ever - but that was last year. New horror movies have come out, so once again they sought to find out what movies scare viewers most. The methodology was simple: rig viewers up to a heart monitor and have them watch scary movies. Then, 250 viewers were asked to watch 40 horror movies from all eras, and the viewer’s heart rate was logged and compared to an average resting heart rate of 64 beats per minute.

What did they find? That the 2020 horror film “Host” was named the #1 scariest movie of all time, while “Sinister” dropped to second. Rounding out the Top 5: “Insidious”, “The Conjuring” and “Hereditary”

Other interesting facts:

  • The best “jump-scare” goes to “Insidious”
  • “The Exorcist” has dropped out of the Top 20 Scariest Films Ever
  • The scariest foreign film is 2016’s “Terrified”
  • Only three films made more than twenty years ago made the list: “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (16thscariest), “Halloween” (17th) and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (18th).

All the details can be found here; at the very least you have a great list of Halloween horror movies to choose from. Happy watching!
