Megan Moroney kickstarted her meteoric rise as a country artist with her breakout single, “Tennessee Orange.”

The award-winning artist and diehard University of Georgia fan sings about a romance with a man who supports the rival team; however, she’s willing to wear “Tennessee Orange” for him. The hit single appeared on Moroney’s debut studio album, Lucky, which arrived in 2023.

Moroney, 28, spoke about the song with Southern Living Editor-in-Chief Sid Evans on the first-ever Biscuits & Jam Live event. Moroney and Evans recorded the podcast in New York City. The country superstar reminisced on her mom’s reaction to “Tennessee Orange,” and what she said in response.

“When I write songs, I send my mom a little work tape from my phone, and the first thing she says back is not 'Oh, I like the song,’ or ‘I don't really like it.’ She's like, ‘Don't tell me this is true…don't tell me you're wearing Tennessee orange.’” And I [said], ‘At least it's not Florida orange!’ Moroney said. She added, of her loyalty to UGA: “There's a lot of pride there in being a Georgia Bulldog, so I kind of made it my whole personality. I loved going to school there. I met my best friends. It obviously changed the trajectory of my life going to school there so there's a lot of pride.”

Throughout the conversation, Moroney also spoke about how her niece inspired a song on her newest album, writing a song for Kenny Chesney, the female artists who inspired her, and more.

Moroney’s latest studio album is Cloud 9, a 16-track project (including the bonus track) that arrived last month. Moroney previously said of Cloud 9: “Similar to the first two albums [2023’s Lucky and 2024’s Am I Okay?], it’s all written about honest, personal experiences, but these songs were written by the strongest, most confident version of myself I’ve ever been. My feet feel firmly planted in my artistry and it was fun to play around sonically, while still sticking to my roots of what my fans and I love. Cloud 9 is a state of mind, and I have no doubt this will be the best chapter yet.”
