One would have to assume Chinese people will be saying, “Happy New Year, Pottah” with a sneer this year. Draco Malfoy, the villain from the "Harry Potter" series, has become an unlikely mascot for China's upcoming Lunar New Year. It's all about his Chinese name. "Malfoy" translates to "Ma Er Fu" in Mandarin, where the first word means "horse" and the last refers to good fortune. That makes the character a perfect fit for the Year of the Horse, which begins February 17th. Videos on social media show people putting red posters with Malfoy's face on doors, fridges, and walls. Merchants are selling stickers, magnets, and phone covers featuring the Slytherin bully. It hasn’t escaped the attention of the real Draco, either; Tom Felton, who played Malfoy in the films, posted a photo of a giant banner with his face at a Chinese shopping mall on his Instagram Story, joining in on the fun.
