You’re not usually expecting to find vintage footwear while cleaning up, but volunteers cleaning up a beach in Wales made a strange find: hundreds of old leather shoes. The group Beach Academy discovered about 200 shoes and soles at Ogmore Beach in December, with the total now over 400. The shoes have hobnails in the soles and look like they date back to Victorian times, more than 150 years ago. Some appear to be men's boots, while others look like children's shoes. The leading idea is that the footwear came from a cargo ship called the Frolic, which sank after hitting nearby Tusker Rock around 150 years ago. The ship was carrying shoes from Italy, which backs up the idea. Over time, the shoes may have washed up the Ogmore River and gotten stuck in the rocks. Local residents say they have found similar old shoes along the coast for years.
