How big of a pest do you have to be for the town you live in to sue you over it? The town of Mihama in Japan is preparing to sue a resident in his 60s who has been harassing town hall staff for five years. The trouble started in 2020 when the man wanted subsidies to improve earthquake resistance on his property, but his buildings weren't eligible. Instead of accepting this, he began calling and visiting the town hall almost every day, verbally abusing staff, demanding to speak with supervisors, and calling them "stupid."
From April to November this year alone, he made over 800 phone calls and sent letters to nearly every department. The harassment has become so bad that Mihama drafted a resolution allowing them to sue people for excessive complaints. They're seeking about $25,000 based on wasted employee salaries, and after word of the lawsuit got out, the man stopped all communication. The town says they won't sue if his behavior continues to improve.
