  • Rare Weather Phenomenon: Brown Snow Falls In Rumford, Maine (REAL

Snowfall in Maine is far from unusual, but the town of Rumford witnessed a strange twist on Tuesday: brown-colored snow. The rare phenomenon was caused by a malfunction at a local paper mill, which released a by-product known as spent black liquor into the air, town officials confirmed on Facebook. Black liquor, a by-product of the paper-making process, resulted in the bizarre discoloration that left residents puzzled. While the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) later tested the snow and found it to have a pH level of "8 or lower," indicating it was non-toxic, town officials urged caution. "We are confident that the public safety concerns are minimal at this time," the town posted, "but out of an abundance of caution, please avoid ingesting or direct skin contact with the brown snow." Initially, tests had shown some samples with a pH of 10, categorizing the substance as a potential skin irritant. Photos of the brown-tinted snow blanketing an open sports field quickly made their way online. While a rainy Wednesday washed away the discoloration, town officials took proactive steps by notifying the local school district to warn children against playing in the snow. Pet owners were also advised to keep their animals away. The paper mill responsible has agreed to cover the costs of third-party testing to ensure public safety, the town added.
