An American prostate cancer patient in his 50s is the subject of a write-up in the BMJ Journal because of a very unusual case of FAS, or Foreign Accent Syndrome. Despite having no Irish heritage, he started talking with “an uncontrollable ‘Irish brogue’” during treatment. While there have been cases of FAS caused by brain injuries or diseases, this is one of the only cases documented where there was nothing wrong with his brain. While doctors have a name for the condition, science still has no idea what causes Foreign Accent Syndrome.
