A research team at Nottingham Trent University has created a woven textile embedded with 1,200 miniature solar panels, and they say it could be used to charge a smartwatch or mobile phone if it were made into clothing; in tests, the material generated 394 milliwatts of electricity under direct noontime sunlight. Textiles researcher Dr. Theodore Hughes-Riley said, “This prototype gives an exciting glimpse of the future potential for e-textiles.” The solar cells embedded in the cloth are 0.2 inches long and 0.06 inches wide, and the team says they’re undetectable to a wearer and can be machine washed with other laundry.
