When thousands of bike riders on RAGBRAI peddle thru northeast Iowa late next week, they just might quench their thirst with corn beer.
A northeast Iowa farmer's crops, and especially his "cover crops," are some of the ingredients. Fayette County farmer Loren Steinlage grows cover crops as a way to deter soil erosion and improve water quality. The grains are then malted and used by a Decorah beer maker.
The latest version is described as a premium, full-bodied Iowa corn lager. Each can contains about 40-percent corn.
