Parents at Charlotte Catholic School in North Carolina are furious over the banner used by the opposing team’s cheerleaders last Friday night. The Butler High cheerleading squad held up a banner that said “Sniff sniff, you smell that? $ Privilege $.” Melissa Swanson, the mother of a biracial student at Charlotte Catholic, says the sign was directed at “rich white” families. While Swanson says she’s happy with the fact that the Butler cheerleaders have apologized and the school district says they’ll be held accountable for the message on the banner, she says it’s important that the two squads plan to meet to foster “goodwill and understanding.”
