According to researchers, radioactive hybrid boars are roaming the evacuated zone around the Fukushima nuclear disaster area in Japan. Donovan Anderson, a researcher at Fukushima University has been driving through the exclusion zone around the nuclear reactor collecting tissue samples from the surging population of wild boars. The results show that 16% of the wild boars in the area are radioactive hybrid animals produced by crossbreeding between wild boars and domesticated pigs that have survived. It sounds like a bad science fiction movie, but it’s not as bad as it sounds according to Anderson. The boars are radioactive, but he says they’re not mutants. Actually, he says the amount of radioactivity in the animals would be ‘very insignificant if they were cooked and eaten, and radiation levels in some parts of the area are now under the standard limits, allowing humans to start returning to the region.
