David Bookstaver was months away from retirement when a butt dial ended his career. He had been the spokesperson for the Office of Court Administration (OCA) in New York for 20 years until 2015 when his boss retired. The woman who replaced him, Chief Judge Janet DiFiore, brought in her own spokesperson for the OCA, but Bookstaver's title and $166-thousand a year salary stayed put. Bookstaver was counting down to his October 1st retirement when he butt-dialed a "New York Post" reporter while bragging about how he only comes into work two days a week. “I spoke to [the reporter] on the record for a while. I said, ‘I’m in a much less visible position; that doesn’t mean I’m not doing anything,’" Bookstaver said in the voicemail he accidentally left. “But, frankly, look, the bottom line: The story’s true. I’m not doing anything. I barely show up to work and I’ve been caught.” Understandably, Bookstaver was canned once the reporter blew the whistle on his very lax lifestyle.
