When Pickleball Gets Spicy Seniors, Paddles, and 911

Have we hit peak pickleball? Because this one got messy fast.

A match at a country club in Port Orange turned spicy after a “kitchen” call. If you are new, the kitchen is the no-volley zone by the net. Step in during a volley, and you lose the point. Simple rule, big feelings.

Here is what I am seeing:

  • A player got called for stepping in the kitchen.
  • Words flew after the match, including the C-word at someone’s wife.
  • Then punches, a paddle swing, and a trip to the hospital for a cut over the eye.
  • Police say a 70-year-old woman was pushed.
  • A 63-year-old man was arrested, and his 51-year-old wife is facing a charge too.
  • Court date is March 3.
  • I love a passionate game. I do not love a paddle to the face. If a slur shows up, I vote for walking away and letting the officials or security handle it. No trophy is worth a mugshot, and no rec game is worth a scar.

Let's be honest...I wasn't that surprised that this took place in Florida!
