California Republican Rep. Doug LaMalfa, who's served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 13 years, has died at the age of 65, Majority Whip Tom Emmer announced on his X account Tuesday (January 6).

"Jacquie and I are devastated about the sudden loss of our friend, Congressman Doug LaMalfa. Doug was a loving father and husband, and staunch advocate for his constituents and rural America. Our prayers are with Doug’s wife, Jill, and their children," Emmer wrote.

LaMalfa's death brings the Republican's majority to 218-213, following the resignation of former Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene taking effect earlier this week.

LaMalfa was elected to California's 1st district in 2012 and was in his seventh term after previously serving as a member of the state's Senate from the 4th district from December 2010 to August 2012 and a member of its State Assembly from the 2nd district from December 2002 to November 2008. The veteran politician served on the Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Transportation Committees.

"I am deeply stunned and incredibly saddened by the news of my friend Congressman Doug LaMalfa’s passing," North Carolina Republican Rep. Greg Murphy wrote on his Facebook account. "First and foremost, may God grant his family, friends, staff and other loved ones His peace and understanding during this incredibly difficult time. I mourn his loss and will greatly miss his friendship, immense kindness, warmth and dedication to service of others."
