A couple has learned that their toast rack - which was purchased over 80-years-ago - has the potential to sell for thousands of dollars at auction. The sellers, who wish not to be named, say the toast rack was bought back in 1936 by newlyweds who just needed to furnish their first home. Now, experts are saying it’s a lost relic of the British Victorian Bohemian elite and could be the most sought after in the world. “The toast rack was bought by my wife’s parents when they got married in 1936,” says the seller. “They chose it because they liked it – and they used it. I would guess that they didn’t pay much for it. They needed it for their first home. They had no idea it was anything special and, when we acquired it, we didn’t at first. Apparently, they tried to use it, but stopped because it was "a bit wobbly and the toast fell out" so they put it away. Later, the sellers found out it was designed by Victorian designer Christopher Dresser, a pioneer of industrial design according to John Keightley of Hansons Auctioneers. Others by the same designer have sold between $5,700 and $16,000. The toast rack hits the auction block at Hansons Auctioneers in Etwall, Derby Jun 19th. Interested?
