Long, long ago and far away back in the 1970's I worked for a radio station here in the Quad Cities called KSTT...maybe you remember it? Here's what we looked like back in 1979:
KSTT had aired a weekend show called American Top 40 since it began back in 1970. By the time I got to KSTT in 1977 it was HUGELY popular show and listeners loved it. Little did I know I would someday MEET Casey in person!
It finally happened....a lifetime later, after I came here to WLLR. In 2000 I attended corporate meetings for our new owners Clear Channel Media & Entertainment, and got to spend a couple of minutes chatting with this legend of radio in the 1970's and 80's.
Guess what? He was a very kind and gentle man...I told him about how my station had run his show back 20+ years earlier, how much listeners had enjoyed it, and how I'd always admired his skills as a voicover talent. Most people know he was the voice of 'Shaggy' in the cartoon 'Scooby Doo', but he was much more than that. In the '70's and early '80's, you couldn't turn on TV without hearing Casey! Here are a couple of national commercials he did: this one for Heinz Ketchup. And this one for the 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle. I told him how I'd done voicework for commercials and he'd always been an inspiration to me.
On this night when we've learned of his passing, Casey: thanks for making weekends fun for three generations of Americans.
And thanks for being an inspiration for a young radio guy from the Quad Cities!
